SHILLONG: Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basawiamoit has strongly advocated for non-violent, democratic movements as the most effective way to hold the government accountable and achieve meaningful change.
Commenting on the recent unrest and anti-government demonstrations in Shillong, Basawiamoit warned that violence only benefits the administration by allowing it to deflect from core issues and focus on law and order concerns.
He emphasized that violent disruptions enable opportunistic elements to hijack legitimate protests and damage the credibility of organizers, reaffirming peaceful resistance as the safest and most effective strategy.

Basawiamoit praised the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) leadership for reaffirming their commitment to peaceful protest despite public criticism and media scrutiny.
He condemned those who incited violence during the demonstrations and held the state government responsible for failing to prevent the unrest, citing a lack of adequate police deployment despite prior knowledge of the planned rally.
The VPP president also criticized the aggressive response from Assam’s commercial vehicle associations, describing their counter-protests as disproportionate and an unnecessary show of force in reaction to the events in Shillong.
