SHILLONG: As Vice President of India C.P. Radhakrishnan travelled through Umiam en route to Shillong on Monday, members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), North Khasi Hills District Unit, staged a peaceful roadside demonstration to spotlight long-standing demands affecting Meghalaya and the indigenous Khasi community.
The KSU used the Vice President’s official visit to call for immediate executive and constitutional action—chief among them, the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to safeguard indigenous rights and the formal inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
The union also urged intervention to resolve persistent administrative issues at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).

KSU representatives emphasized that these demands have remained unresolved despite repeated appeals and underscored the peaceful nature of their protest.
They called on both central and state authorities to make good on their commitments and take decisive action without further delay.
