MAWKYRWAT: In a development that could reshape the political landscape of South West Khasi Hills, United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar is facing an uphill battle to protect his fortress ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

Following a massive exodus in April where nearly 3,000 of his supporters and key leaders defected to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), the two-time lawmaker conceded on Thursday that he is navigating an incredibly fragile political landscape.

This massive erosion of his core support base threatens to throw a wrench into his electoral math, a vulnerability amplified by his historically razor-thin victory margins of just 458 votes in 2018 and 1,272 votes in 2023.

However, Tongkhar’s unwavering optimism that he can reel back a significant chunk of these defectors has introduced an unpredictable dynamic into an already volatile contest.

The mass defection has done more than just weaken the incumbent’s immediate standing; it has triggered intense speculation regarding Tongkhar’s own political future and whether he will jump ship to the NPP before the next polls.

Political observers are closely watching whether the seasoned legislator can successfully orchestrate a counter-strategy to reverse this damaging political drift and reclaim the very base that ensured his survival in the last two consecutive elections.

The central question looming over Mawkyrwat is no longer just about party loyalty, but whether the UDP can prevent its prominent face from being completely eclipsed by the expanding footprint of the ruling party.

Projecting a posture of resilience against the growing political storm, Tongkhar has dismissed the gravity of the crisis, downplaying the overall impact of the recent desertions.

He strongly argued that the group crossing over to the NPP represents only a minor fraction of his broader, deeply entrenched support base, signaling that he remains unfazed by the ruling party’s aggressive poaching tactics.
