SHILLONG: A critical inter-state vehicle interception by Assam Police has enabled West Jaintia Hills Police to crack the murder case of 28-year-old Damehi Mulich, whose body was found at Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills on July 31.
The breakthrough came after officers from the Gumrah Police Post in Cachar district, Assam, detained a Maruti Alto K10 (registration ML05 AG 0285) along with two occupants on July 31.
Acting swiftly, the Phramer Traffic Cell in West Jaintia Hills coordinated with Assam counterparts, secured the vehicle, and transferred the suspects back to Meghalaya for investigation.
The detained vehicle was subsequently confirmed by family members as belonging to Mulich, a resident of Ialong (Luti Tuber) in West Jaintia Hills.
Following this confirmation, Jowai Police registered Jowai PS Case No. 56(07)2026 under BNS Sections 103(1) (murder) and 140(1) (vehicle theft).

The initial arrests of Dapjingkmen Paslein (26) of Lakasein and Samuel Lakai (25) of Umkyrpong on July 31 led to further investigation and the arrest of a third accomplice, Duniwankmen Sutnga (26) of Khaidong, on August 4.
All three suspects, hailing from East Jaintia Hills, have been remanded to judicial custody after being produced in court, as investigators work to reconstruct the precise timeline of the crime.
The West Jaintia Hills Additional Superintendent of Police formally acknowledged the pivotal role played by Cachar district police in the breakthrough and issued an advisory urging citizens to secure their vehicles and promptly report any suspicious activity to the 112 emergency helpline.
