SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Police have made significant headway into multiple criminal cases across the state, including an assault case involving members of a prominent organization, a mysterious missing person’s report, and a suspected murder.

In connection with the recent assault on four laborers in Laitkynshew, Sohra, Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that a local court has granted four days of police custody for two primary accused individuals. One of the victims sustained a severe head injury during the attack. Following the incident, a formal case was registered under relevant sections of the law at the Sohra Police Station.

SP Syiem revealed that the arrested individuals belong to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU). He noted that while more individuals are suspected to be involved in the assault, the investigation will proceed based on the ongoing interrogation and examination of the accused.

The current police remand will conclude on Tuesday, after which they will be remanded back to judicial custody, with officials assuring that the law will take its own course.

Missing Case

Meanwhile, police have launched a massive search operation following a missing person’s report filed for 25-year-old Ebanzer Laloo, a labourer who disappeared on May 31.

A statewide alert has been dispatched to all districts and police stations across Meghalaya. Authorities are currently investigating whether his disappearance is linked to an altercation involving a young boy on the evening of May 30.

Providing further context on the situation, the SP detailed an incident in Mawblei, which stemmed from a minor scuffle and the subsequent assault of a 15-year-old girl. The altercation escalated when the now-missing person and the brother of the victim intervened and were assaulted during the fight.

Because Laloo went missing the very next day, on May 31, the police are exploring all possible angles, including retaliation from the scuffle, though their primary focus remains on locating him safely.

Murder Investigation

In a separate and grim development, the police have initiated a murder investigation following the recovery of a body in Them Wahdira, located near Mawjongka. The deceased has been identified as Phetro Jana, a resident of Mawjongka, who had been missing since May 27.

Upon discovering the body, investigators noted visible injuries on his neck. While a formal First Information Report (FIR) has been received and a murder case registered, authorities stated that the exact cause of death will only be conclusively established once the final postmortem report is received.
