SHILLONG: In a major political development, the Meghalaya State Cabinet, on Friday, approved the tabling of the long-awaited Expert Committee Report on the State Reservation Policy during the upcoming Budget Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The Budget Session is scheduled to be held from February 16 to February 27, 2026, following a proposal moved by the state government to the Governor of Meghalaya to summon the House.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the decision after a Cabinet Retreat held at Mawkasiang in New Shillong Township, stating that the Cabinet held a detailed and “threadbare discussion” on the committee’s findings before arriving at the decision.
Emphasising transparency and due legislative process, the Chief Minister said the report will first be laid on the floor of the Assembly to allow an informed debate among elected representatives.
“Once we receive the Governor’s assent and the session begins, the Expert Committee’s report will be placed before the House for detailed deliberation. Only after that process will the report be made public,” Sangma said.
He added that placing the report before the Assembly would ensure accountability, transparency, and a structured discussion on one of the most sensitive policy matters in the state.
The Cabinet’s decision comes amid mounting pressure from the Voice of People’s Party (VPP), which has been demanding immediate disclosure of the report and has warned of renewed statewide agitation if the government delayed action.
