GUWAHATI: Tensions at the Jorabat inter-state border between Assam and Meghalaya have escalated for a third straight day, following the passage of a high-level Meghalaya official convoy through the area.
The convoy, carrying Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and Chief Secretary Shakeel Ahmed, drew angry protests from transport workers and locals, who chanted slogans condemning the Meghalaya government in response to recent attacks on Assam-registered vehicles in Shillong.
The VIP movement took place amid ongoing inter-state diplomatic efforts to resolve the border crisis.

Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora and Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, along with the Chief Secretaries of both states, are leading inter-ministerial talks aimed at restoring normalcy and reopening trade and transit routes.
The unrest at Jorabat and Khanapara flared after widespread violence and vehicle damage during a student rally in Shillong.
With local transport unions and cab operators maintaining restrictions on Meghalaya-bound traffic, both state administrations remain engaged in active negotiations to defuse the standoff and ensure safe passage at the border.
