SHILLONG: In a major political development, former United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA Mayralborn Syiem has clarified the motivations behind a group of eight former UDP leaders joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Syiem emphasized that the switch was driven by a desire to resolve long-standing state issues that, in their view, only the central NDA government can address.
Syiem outlined five critical concerns: inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule, the impact of the FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 on local institutions, simplification of coal mining restrictions, implementation of the Meghalaya Resident Safety Security Amendment Bill 2020, and relocation of the Harijan Colony in Them Iew Mawlong.
He said the group believed joining the BJP would help “break the ice” and secure progress on these matters.
Syiem stressed that the group holds no animosity toward the UDP, viewing political realignment as part of democratic dynamics.
Responding to criticism and skepticism—especially regarding past unfulfilled promises on coal mining—he expressed confidence that, with the BJP’s national reach, these issues can now be addressed.
Syiem also rejected concerns about the BJP’s national ideology, asserting the focus in Meghalaya will be on development, women’s safety, unemployment, and farmers’ welfare.
Looking ahead to the 2028 elections, Syiem voiced optimism about the BJP’s prospects and reiterated that voters will judge parties on their performance and delivery.
