Illegal Collection Row: EKH SP Orders Probe After Viral Videos Surface

SP said the constables found to be involved in the "extortion" would be suspended, with possible transfer of the Officer-in-Charge awaiting.

SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem has ordered an inquiry into allegations of illegal collection of money from truck drivers along the National Highway, following videos circulated on social media and allegations raised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
Reacting to the KSU’s demand for the transfer of the SP and Deputy Commissioner over the alleged collection, Syiem said that he immediately directed SP (City) Dangsan Khyiem to conduct a preliminary inquiry after becoming aware of the videos showing alleged checking by individuals associated with police presence along the highway.
He said the inquiry has identified the constables who had been deployed at the sheds concerned. According to the SP, the personnel had been assigned to conduct patrolling and ensure the safety of trucks, particularly during evening and night hours, following requests from truckers’ associations amid concerns over frequent incidents of dacoity.
“By the look of things, there was no proper checking and there is also a chance that these people may have collected money illegally,” Syiem said, adding that the videos showing truck drivers allegedly going to a shed to hand over money raised suspicion and warranted a detailed inquiry.
He clarified that police checking should be conducted openly and transparently, with proper nakas, police personnel and equipment, and not in the manner depicted in the videos.
“Checking was not appropriate and there is some level of suspicion out there, for which I am going to conduct an inquiry,” the SP said.
Syiem said the constables found to be involved would be suspended, while a decision would also be taken on the possible transfer of the Officer-in-Charge of the concerned area. He said the matter would be placed before the district transfer committee for consideration.
The SP also appealed to truck drivers not to pay money to any police personnel on the road.
“I would like to urge all truck drivers that they should not pay money to any policeman who is on the road in my district, East Khasi Hills, or anywhere,” he said.
He further urged truck drivers to report any demand for money or illegal collection by police personnel or non-state actors to the police control room or emergency number 112. Complaints can also be submitted directly at the office of the Superintendent of Police if the helpline response is not satisfactory.
Reiterating the department’s position, Syiem said, “East Khasi Hills Police has zero tolerance to any form of illegal collection of money.”
