KHLIEHRIAT: The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the East Jaintia Hills District Police has successfully intercepted a suspected inter-state drug smuggling operation, apprehending two individuals and seizing a consignment of heroin.
The operation was executed on Tuesday evening as part of a strategic Naka (checkpost) operation under the jurisdiction of the Lumshnong Police Station.
According to Vikash Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP) for East Jaintia Hills, the police received credible intelligence late on the night of October 14 about a suspicious vehicle traveling from Silchar, Assam, believed to be transporting illegal narcotics.
Responding swiftly, a dedicated team led by the Umkiang Patrol Post established a Naka. During the check, the team successfully apprehended the driver, identified as Abdul Rob Laskar alias Munna (22), a resident of Silchar, Assam.
The investigation quickly led to a breakthrough. Subsequently, with support from the ANTF-Meghalaya, the police apprehended the co-accused and alleged habitual offender, Asif Wahlang, a resident of Laban, Shillong.
During the search of the detained vehicle, a Hyundai Venue (bearing registration number AS-01-EJ-8977), police recovered five soap boxes containing approximately 60 grams of suspected heroin.
“A case has been registered at Lumshnong Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act,” SP Kumar confirmed, adding that “Investigation is now actively underway to establish the backward and forward linkages of this inter-state gang.”
