JSU Welcomes Inspection of Kiang Nangbah Statue Site at Mihmyntdu by Ministers

The two ministers have assured that they would take steps to acquire around 10,000 square feet of land for the project.

SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) today expressed happiness over the inspection of the proposed site for the construction of a statue of Jaintia freedom fighter Kiang Nangbah at Mihmyntdu by two Cabinet Ministers of the Meghalaya Government.

The site was inspected by Minister of Arts and Culture Sanbor Shullai and Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Wailadmiki Shylla, who is also the local MLA.
Speaking to the media, JSU President Jersom Shylla said that the union had been demanding the installation of a life-size statue of Kiang Nangbah at Mihmyntdu since 2022, during the tenure of Sanbor Shullai as the Arts and Culture Minister. However, after the portfolio was handed over to another minister, the matter remained pending.
He said that after Sanbor Shullai resumed charge as the Arts and Culture Minister, the union once again raised the issue with him. The JSU President expressed satisfaction that the matter has now received attention following the inspection of the proposed site.
Shylla informed that the land identified for the project belongs to the Transport Department and that the union had earlier approached the department seeking the land for setting up the statue.
He added that the two ministers have assured that they would take steps to acquire around 10,000 square feet of land for the project.
The JSU also expressed concern over the condition of the State Central Library at Jowai and urged the authorities to construct a new building by replacing the existing old structure.
The union expressed hope that the visit of the two ministers would pave the way for the early implementation of the proposed projects and fulfill the long-standing aspirations of the people.
