SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle on Tuesday shut down an alleged unauthorized religious structure in Lower Lumparing, citing violations of land use norms.
Led by General Secretary Shiningstar Chyne, the group acted after determining that a site originally designated as a residence for a graveyard caretaker had been converted into a functioning mosque, locally referred to as “Lumparing Masjid.”
According to the KSU, an internal inquiry found that the occupants did not possess valid land ownership documents, and that the conversion of the site into a place of worship had been carried out without approval from the local Dorbar Shnong or relevant authorities.
The situation escalated after it emerged that the Lower Lumparing Dorbar Shnong had earlier directed the removal of the structure following complaints, but the occupants allegedly failed to comply.
Acting on this, KSU members sealed the premises and asked the Imam, who was reportedly residing there, to vacate the site.
Reiterating its stand against illegal encroachment, the KSU stated that it will submit a formal petition to the district administration seeking permanent removal of the structure and restoration of the land.
