“Mawsynram Is Not for Sale”: Pressure Groups Oppose SAI Computer Limited in Meghalaya

Following the protest, Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh invited representatives of the organisations for talks.

SHILLONG: Pressure groups from Mawsynram Sub-Division on Monday staged a protest outside the residence of Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh, demanding the immediate withdrawal of SAI Computer Limited from electricity distribution-related work in the region.

The protest was organised by NGO’s including the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC). Members of the organisations gathered outside the minister’s residence carrying placards and raising slogans against the government’s decision to entrust the work to the company.
The demonstrators displayed placards with messages such as “Remove SAI Computer Limited immediately,” “We demand clarification from the Power Minister,” and “Mawsynram Sub-Division is not a market for sale.” Some protesters also called on the minister to resign if the company was not removed.
Following the protest, Metbah Lyngdoh invited representatives of the organisations for talks and asked them to visit his office for further discussions on the issue.
Speaking to reporters, Kyllang Thongni alleged that SAI Computer Limited was operating with business motives and should therefore be removed from the area.
He also alleged that the company had been intimidating local residents and warned that the groups would intensify their agitation, including a march to the Secretariat along with the people of Mawsynram, if their demands were not addressed.
