SHILLONG: The Mawmluh Cherra Cements Employees Union has appealed to the Meghalaya government to release the remaining dues owed to workers of Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) at the earliest.
Speaking to the media, Union President Pynskhem Lyngdoh said that during the recently concluded Budget Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated that the payment meant for MCCL workers had already been processed.
Lyngdoh informed that the union had earlier submitted a letter to the Chief Minister on December 3, requesting that the pending amount be released within this year. He added that the union was encouraged after the Chief Minister mentioned in the Assembly that the payment had been sanctioned.
“We are hopeful that the dues will be released within this month, or at the latest by the first week of April,” Lyngdoh said.
He also appealed to the concerned authorities to extend their support in ensuring that the workers receive their payments soon, noting that many employees have been waiting for their dues for a long time.
Lyngdoh added that once the remaining payments are released, the workers intend to move forward and focus on rebuilding their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the union, Arnold L. Thabah, also urged the government to expedite the release of the funds, stating that this would be the final installment due to the workers.
He expressed hope that the government would release the remaining amount soon and thanked the state government for the assistance provided so far.
Thabah noted that after receiving earlier payments, many MCCL workers have begun rebuilding their lives by constructing homes, starting small businesses, and taking up other livelihood activities.
