SHILLONG: At a state-level conference in Shillong, Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed called on census officials and field enumerators to ensure accurate and inclusive data collection for the upcoming Census of India 2027.
The event, organized by the General Administration Department and Directorate of Census Operations, brought together Principal Census Officers, Deputy Commissioners, and senior officials to discuss the second phase of the census.
Dr. Ahammed congratulated the team for successfully completing the House Listing and Housing Census phase and acknowledged the efforts of nearly 10,000 personnel.

Highlighting the unique challenges posed by Meghalaya’s rural and tribal demographics, the Chief Secretary urged enumerators to ensure no one is left out, especially in remote areas like Baghmara and Ranikor.
He noted that accurate data collection would directly inform policy-making across sectors such as healthcare, education, social welfare, and infrastructure.
Dr. Ahammed also stressed the importance of census data in attracting private investment and supporting economic growth, as the state aims to build a $10-16 billion economy.
He urged the census team to approach their duties with dedication, recognizing their pivotal role in Meghalaya’s and India’s future development.
