SHILLONG: Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) President James P.K. Sangma on Monday said that the law clearly permits elected representatives such as Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly to hold executive positions in sports associations, provided they are not serving as ministers or government servants.
Responding to queries regarding the functioning of the MCA, Sangma said the issue of pending salaries for MCA staff was an internal matter of the association. He acknowledged that the association has been facing longstanding challenges and legacy issues that have affected its operations and delayed certain processes.
He said efforts are underway to resolve these issues at the earliest so that pending salaries can be released. Sangma expressed concern for both the office staff and support staff of the association and assured that steps are being taken to address the matter as quickly as possible.
On allegations of sexual harassment within the association, Sangma said there should be an Internal Complaints Committee to examine such matters. He noted that he assumed charge as MCA President only in January and that the issue predates his tenure, although he is aware of the concerns and shortcomings within the association.
Sangma said the MCA is currently awaiting the report of the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission. He assured that once the report is received, the association will take up the matter immediately and initiate appropriate action based on its findings.
