Meghalaya Govt Assures No Mandatory VLTDs for Local Vehicles

The Deputy Chief Minister assured them that tracking devices would not be made mandatory for vehicles plying within Meghalaya.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Joint Co-ordination Committee of Passenger Vehicles today met Deputy Chief Minister in charge of the Transport Department, Sniawbhalang Dhar, urging the government not to make the installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs) mandatory for vehicles operating locally within districts.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, committee leader Wandonbok Jyrwa said the discussion was fruitful and that most of the demands submitted by the association were accepted by the government. He stated that the committee had strongly opposed the proposed implementation of vehicle tracking devices in the state.

Jyrwa said the association had opposed the move from the very beginning and that following the meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister, the issue has now been resolved. As per the assurance given by the government, vehicles operating locally within districts will not be required to install VLTDs.

He further added that the Deputy Chief Minister assured them that tracking devices would not be made mandatory for vehicles plying within Meghalaya.

Highlighting the state’s unique geographical and travel conditions, Jyrwa explained that most local vehicles operate within short distances of 5 to 10 kilometres, unlike in other states, making the installation of such devices unnecessary.

Regarding vehicles travelling outside the state, Jyrwa said discussions are still ongoing. However, he reiterated that for vehicles operating locally within districts, the installation of vehicle tracking devices will not be compulsory.
