SHILLONG: State Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, while addressing Meghalaya’s low ranking in the Performance Grading Index (PGI), stated that while the ranking is an important subject for discussion, the primary focus should be on evaluating whether the government has taken concrete action to address the issue.
Lahkmen Rymbui shared that the government has been actively working to rectify and upgrade this sector, asserting that clear efforts are being made to systematically improve the state’s score year after year.
He expressed strong optimism that Meghalaya’s ranking will witness a significant upgrade in the upcoming PGI score for the year 2026-2027. This turnaround, he noted, will be driven by the unprecedented initiatives implemented by the government over the last eight years, which are unlike anything done prior to this period.
The Minister added that these ongoing efforts are not merely aimed at improving the PGI score itself, but are designed to provide a comprehensive, high-quality, and authentic education system. This holistic approach focuses on improving student learning outcomes, upgrading teacher capabilities, increasing student enrollment, and addressing all necessary infrastructural and academic requirements.
The Minister emphasized that this critical task demands consistent and rigorous hard work, noting that progress cannot be achieved overnight but requires a dedicated daily commitment.
He stated that the entire education department—including officials, teachers, and school managements—is working collaboratively toward this shared goal.
He urged everyone not to view the PGI simply as a score or a number, but rather to look at the actual progress of individual schools and the overall upliftment of the education sector, reiterating that the ultimate priority remains providing top-tier, quality education to the students of the state.
