Meghalaya Govt Invests ₹800 Crore in Schools, Plans Reforms for Secondary Education: Tynsong

The Meghalaya government is now turning its attention to challenges in Secondary and Higher Secondary education

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong

SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has said the state government had worked relentlessly over the past year to resolve the issues faced by SSA, Adhoc and 4th teachers, admitting that the challenges had led to many sleepless nights for the administration.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Meghalaya SSA School Association Central Body and the Meghalaya 4th Teachers Association at Madan Student, he stated that with sustained efforts and support, the government has been able to address several of these concerns.

Tynsong said that in 2025, a series of meetings with the Education Department were held to remove doubts and low morale among teachers, adding that these efforts have now yielded positive results, evident in the improved confidence and satisfaction among the teaching community.

He further informed that the government is now turning its attention to challenges in Secondary and Higher Secondary education. Highlighting that over ₹800 crore has already been invested in LP and UP schools, he said similar measures would be taken to strengthen higher levels of education. He expressed confidence that these initiatives would bring significant transformation to the state’s education sector.

The Deputy Chief Minister called on teachers to work in close coordination with the government to achieve its reform agenda, stressing the importance of unity, consultation and collective responsibility. He also cautioned against claims of perfection, noting that all individuals have limitations and that progress requires shared effort.

He also announced that the government has constituted a commission of experienced experts to recommend reforms in the education sector, adding that gradual improvements are already visible. Referring to the SSLC examination results, Tynsong rejected allegations of malpractice and credited initiatives introduced under Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, particularly the provision of academic support materials, which he said have greatly benefited students, especially in rural areas.

Appealing to parents, he urged them to support their children’s education and encourage them to succeed in examinations from their own localities, noting that education plays a key role in shaping maturity and reducing social challenges.

He urged teachers to dedicate themselves fully to their profession, stating that meaningful progress and transformation in the state can only be achieved through education, with the ultimate goal of improving overall learning outcomes.
