Meghalaya Launches ₹25-Crore HIV/AIDS Mission for Youth

The mission will strengthen HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and awareness—especially among youth—with additional funding available.

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced a ₹25 crore, five-year mission to tackle HIV/AIDS in Meghalaya, urging coordinated action from government agencies, educational institutions, NGOs, and the public.

Speaking at the State Red Ribbon Youth Festival 2026, Sangma cited Meghalaya’s high and rising HIV burden, stressing that combating the disease requires active participation from every citizen.

The mission will strengthen HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and awareness—especially among youth—with additional funding available if needed.

Sangma encouraged people to seek confidential testing and timely treatment, emphasizing that effective antiretroviral therapy can suppress the virus.

Highlighting the global 95-95-95 targets, the Chief Minister called on district officials, health workers, and youth leaders to ensure that 95% of people with HIV know their status, receive treatment, and achieve viral suppression.

He urged young people to use social media to spread awareness, challenge stigma, and make informed, responsible decisions about sexual health.

Awards for outstanding contributions to HIV/AIDS prevention were presented to the South Garo Hills District Administration, Civil Hospital Jowai ART Centre, and Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association.

Senior health officials and MACS leaders attended the event, which underscored the importance of youth engagement in fighting stigma and promoting HIV/AIDS awareness in Meghalaya.
