With the High Court monitor’s report expected shortly, public attention is now focused on the next course of action

KHLIEHRIAT: Retired Justice K. B. Katakey, appointed by the Meghalaya High Court to monitor illegal coal mining in the state, has personally witnessed widespread illegal mining activities in East Jaintia Hills district.

Justice Katakey made the observations during his visit to the sites of recent mine explosions in Thangsko village in East Jaintia Hills, where at least 25 people have lost their lives so far. Search and recovery operations by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are still underway.

Key Findings from the Inspection

Speaking to the media after the visit, Justice Katakey said illegal coal mining continues unabated in the district.

He pointed out that such activities were clearly visible along roadsides and in surrounding areas during his journey to the accident site.

“Illegal mining is still highly prevalent in East Jaintia Hills. These activities are visible even from the main roads,” he said.

The court-appointed monitor confirmed that he will submit a detailed report on his findings to the Meghalaya High Court on Saturday.

He also revealed that four separate mine pits were involved in the explosions, which collectively resulted in the 25 confirmed fatalities.

Rescue Operations Continue

Rescue teams from the SDRF and NDRF remain engaged in search operations in the affected areas, amid challenging terrain and hazardous conditions. Officials said efforts are continuing to ensure that no victims remain trapped.

Providing an update, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said that families of 12 victims have so far come forward to claim the bodies of their deceased relatives.

Authorities are continuing the process of identification and coordination with families, while medical and administrative teams remain on standby.
