SHILLONG: The Social Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya, marked the International Day of Older Persons with a programme themed “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.”
Adviser to the Government, Paul Lyngdoh, addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of celebrating ageing, longevity, and the dignity of senior citizens.
Lyngdoh reflected on the challenges and opportunities of ageing, emphasizing that society should aspire to longer, healthier, and more active lives.
He shared the inspiring story of Kmoin Wahlang, a mother of 12 who overcame illness to become a marathon runner, representing India on international platforms even in her later years.

Lyngdoh underscored the need for respectful language and attitudes towards older persons, calling for a renewed culture of respect for their identity and contributions.
The event also featured an address by Iamonlang Syiem, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women.
Senior citizens over 90 were felicitated, and all elderly participants attending the programme were honoured as part of the celebration.
