SHILLONG: A prompt cross-district operation by Meghalaya Police led to the safe recovery of two minor girls on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after they went missing from their village in South West Khasi Hills district.
The children, aged 11 and 13, were found unharmed at a relative’s house in Shillong after traveling unaccompanied by bus across district lines.
The ordeal began early Wednesday morning when the girls disappeared from Tlongpleng village in the Balat region.
Local authorities quickly raised concerns they might be heading toward the state capital and alerted South West Khasi Hills police, who in turn notified their counterparts in East Khasi Hills and activated a coordinated search.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem directed all units in Shillong to initiate search operations, scanning transit points and public spaces on the suspicion that the girls had boarded a bus for Shillong.
The coordinated efforts yielded results by Wednesday afternoon, with search teams tracing the missing minors to a relative’s residence in the Nongrah area, under Rynjah Police Station jurisdiction.
Confirming their safe recovery, SP Vivek Syiem said police were immediately alerted by their South West Khasi Hills counterparts and swiftly verified that the girls had arrived safely in Nongrah.
Both children were found uninjured.
Police have launched an inquiry to determine whether the girls lost their way, intentionally ran away, or were motivated by underlying issues at home.
