SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has taken the lead among political contenders by finalizing its candidate and launching a vigorous campaign for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Meghalaya, ahead of the official notification by the Election Commission.
Leveraging its robust regional identity, localized outreach, and a focus on legal expertise, the UDP is mobilizing its campaign machinery across the state.
UDP President and Cabinet Minister Metbah Lyngdoh acknowledged the logistical challenges posed by the vast geographical expanse of the parliamentary constituency.
He noted that exhaustive door-to-door campaigning is impractical, so the party has delegated primary outreach efforts to local leaders and cadres at the constituency level, with the central leadership providing targeted support as needed.
A central theme of the UDP’s election narrative is the need for a parliamentarian with strong legal credentials.

Party leaders emphasized that upcoming sessions of Parliament will deliberate on crucial legislative amendments, and a candidate well-versed in statutory law will be essential for interpreting complex legislative changes, articulating regional concerns, and safeguarding Meghalaya’s interests at the national level.
Reaffirming its role as a dominant regional voice, the UDP reiterated its commitment to protecting local community interests and ensuring fair, non-discriminatory representation for all sections of society.
The party clarified that it will contest the parliamentary election independently under its own banner, rather than as part of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA).
Addressing its former partner, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), the UDP stated that internal developments within the HSPDP are their own concern, and no fresh communications have been received.
