SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) staged a public protest rally in Shillong on Friday, demanding the immediate resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The demonstration, led by MPCC President Vincent H. Pala, began at the Congress office in Khyndai Lad and culminated with the burning of an effigy of the CEC near the Additional Secretariat.
Addressing the rally, Pala accused Gyanesh Kumar of undermining the integrity of the Election Commission of India, alleging unilateral functioning and ignoring objections raised by fellow Election Commissioners on multiple occasions over the past 10 months.

Pala claimed that the CEC has been acting in favor of the BJP, especially after recent legislative amendments, and accused the BJP of manipulating the electoral process for political gain.
Pala further alleged that electoral rolls were altered and genuine voters deleted in states like West Bengal, and asserted that opposition parties were unfairly denied victories in several states.
He called for the CEC’s immediate resignation and arrest, as well as the formation of an independent commission to investigate the charges, to restore public faith in the Election Commission of India.
