MPCC Disowns Ex MLA Estamur Mominin; Reports Improving Security in Garo Hills

The MPCC expressed hope that normalcy will be fully restored soon, allowing residents to resume their daily lives without disruption.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has officially clarified that former MLA Estamur Mominin is no longer associated with the party, following his decision to contest the upcoming MDC elections as an Independent candidate.

Addressing the media, MPCC Working President Deborah Marak outlined Mominin’s recent political journey, describing multiple shifts across parties before his eventual separation from the Congress.

According to Marak, Mominin was previously with the National People’s Party (NPP) but was denied a ticket in favour of A.T. Mondal. He later joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) before approaching the Congress to seek a ticket for the MDC elections. However, the MPCC declined his request, citing the need to respect the sentiments and preferences of local residents.

“In his place, the party has fielded a female candidate from the Garo community,” Marak said.

Making the party’s position clear, she added, “The fact that Estamur Mominin is contesting as an Independent candidate shows he has no further ties with the Congress. We do not recognise him as a member.”

On policy matters, Marak expressed support for the ongoing agitation by various NGOs demanding stricter regulations regarding Scheduled Tribe (ST) Certificates for MDC candidates. She urged the state government to address the issue with urgency, stating that while the demand has been long-standing, timely action is now critical.

Providing an update on the law and order situation, Marak noted that conditions in parts of Garo Hills—particularly Williamnagar and the Plain Belt areas—are gradually improving.

She said displaced villagers have begun returning to their homes following recent unrest and security forces continue to be deployed in sensitive areas to maintain peace.

Furthemore, she said that while night curfews remain in place, the overall situation is stabilising and becoming “peaceful once again.”

The MPCC expressed hope that normalcy will be fully restored soon, allowing residents to resume their daily lives without disruption.
