SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Youth Federation (MYF) has raised serious concerns over the deplorable condition of a key road from Bangla Sohphie to Sohksar under Sohiong constituency in East Khasi Hills district, urging the state government to take immediate steps for its repair and improvement.
According to MYF Secretary Sherbester Kharthangmaw, the organization conducted an inspection following repeated complaints from the public. He said the road has deteriorated significantly, making it difficult for small vehicles to ply, particularly during the rainy season, thereby causing inconvenience to commuters.
The federation alleged that the road has been left unattended without any repair work. It, however, informed that representations have already been submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and local MLA Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah, seeking urgent intervention to address the issue.
MYF has also demanded that the Public Works Department (PWD) immediately repair the road stretch from Laitarted to Nonglyput, pointing out that despite being barely a year old, it is already in a severely damaged condition. The organization further called for the construction and upgradation of roads connecting Nongthliew, Nonglyput, Bangla Sohphie to Umsning, as well as from Sohksar to Kynroh village.
In addition, the federation stressed the need for constructing a road from Bangla Sohphie to Mawiong to ease transportation for residents, particularly during emergencies.
MYF Bangla Sohphie Unit president R Basaiawmoit stated that although a memorandum had earlier been submitted regarding the repair of the Bangla Sohphie–Sohksar road, no visible action has been taken so far.
The federation urged the Deputy Chief Minister to respond promptly, noting that the road is vital for daily commuting, including access to markets and essential services. It also warned that it may resort to stronger measures if the government fails to act on its demands.
