SHILLONG: What started as a celebratory gathering among colleagues has ended in a grim investigation as East Khasi Hills Police probe the mysterious death of Bipul Inghi, a long-time casual employee of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
While the incident initially appeared to be a tragic accident, startling new details and visible injuries on the victim’s body have sparked allegations of foul play, turning a mourning family’s grief into a demand for justice.
From Celebration to Catastrophe
Bipul Inghi, who had served as a security guard at NEHU since 2011 and was currently posted at the School of Technology, joined his colleagues for a party on the evening of January 6.
According to police reports, the festivities took a dark turn around 7:30 PM. Inghi reportedly sustained “severe injuries” during the event. He was rushed to Supercare Hospital the following day, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on January 8, 2026.
The case took a dramatic turn when Inghi’s body was returned to his home in Khulia, Ri-Bhoi District.
Family members were shocked to discover bruises and marks that they claim are inconsistent with a simple fall or an accidental injury.
Believing there is something “hidden” behind the death, the family has raised concerns that Inghi may have been the victim of an assault rather than a tragic mishap.
Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, confirmed that a meticulous investigation is underway but stressed that the medical evidence will be the deciding factor.
”We cannot yet confirm if this was an accidental death or a homicide,” Bah Syiem stated. “Everything hinges on the Post-Mortem report from Nongpoh and the statements of those who were present at the scene.”
Police have already recorded statements from the NEHU colleagues who attended the party.
The official medical report is expected to reveal whether the force that caused the fatal injuries was accidental or inflicted by another person.
Authorities have warned that if the report suggests “homicidal” intent, the case will be immediately upgraded to a criminal investigation under stringent sections of the law.
As the NEHU community and the family of Bipul Inghi wait for the autopsy results, the central question remains: Was this a party gone wrong, or a cold-blooded crime?
