SHILLONG: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H. Pala has described the defection of United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as part of a predictable national trend, warning that the National People’s Party (NPP) is likely to face a similar fate.
Pala compared the current situation to political developments in Maharashtra, Chennai, and Bihar, where the BJP has historically undermined coalition partners.
Pala noted the irony that the UDP, which once mocked Congress over defections to the NPP and BJP, now finds itself weakened by its own MLAs joining the BJP.
He highlighted former Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh’s past rulings in favor of Congress defectors, pointing out that Lyngdoh now faces the same legal and political challenges.

Pala observed that the same lawyer who represented the Congress in the earlier defection case is now representing the UDP.
The Congress chief expects UDP to pursue legal action against the defections, forcing it to use arguments similar to those it once opposed.
Pala concluded that the UDP must now decide whether to stay in the coalition or break away, emphasizing that legal challenges while sharing power with the NPP-BJP alliance offer little real benefit.
