SONGSAK: A major ransom-kidnapping plot targeting National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) officials was foiled in the early hours of Sunday, August 30, when a joint police team shot dead four heavily armed suspects near Songsak in East Garo Hills.

Acting on intelligence inputs, a specialized task force comprising the Anti-Terror Squad, East Garo Hills Police, and Songsak Police established a checkpoint along the Dagal-Songsak road.

When officers signaled a Bolero vehicle (AS-01-FD-2889) to stop, the occupants opened fire, damaging a police vehicle. Police retaliated, resulting in a brief gunfight.

After the exchange, officers found four suspects—Allason Marak (Mendima, North Garo Hills), Sustom Rabha (Goalpara, Assam), Kalam Ali (Goalpara, Assam), and Bobidul Islam (Goalpara, Assam)—with gunshot wounds.

All were declared dead at Williamnagar Civil Hospital.

All four had extensive criminal histories, including involvement in recent high-profile cases like the Damra firing, robbery, abduction, and extortion across Assam and Meghalaya.

Police recovered two factory-made pistols (one marked “Beretta”), ammunition, and other evidence at the scene.

Superintendent of Police Pawar Swapnil Vasantrao confirmed that formal investigations are underway and urged the public not to circulate rumors, assuring that Meghalaya Police remains committed to safeguarding infrastructure and public safety in the district.
