SHILLONG: Meghalaya is witnessing a significant political shift as sitting and former legislators from multiple parties actively seek entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), signaling a broader realignment ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Senior BJP leader and MLA A.L. Hek revealed on Saturday that interest in joining the party is coming from leaders across districts and party lines, not limited to the Khasi Hills or a single party.
Hek confirmed that discussions are ongoing with candidates from various backgrounds, but declined to name individuals to maintain confidentiality.
He noted that the surge in interest reflects a statewide trend, with leaders from different regions and political outfits seeking to join the BJP.

This development comes amid reports of nine United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs negotiating a merger with the BJP.
Hek stated that the state unit has accepted many of the UDP legislators’ key demands, and their induction is expected soon, pending final approval from the BJP’s national leadership.
Hek emphasized that the growing influx of leaders aligns with the BJP’s long-term strategy to lead the next government in Meghalaya, a plan he has conveyed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
