SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) is set to witness a significant leadership transition as preparations intensify for its 16th General Election, scheduled for May 9, 2026. The final list of candidates for the 2026–2029 Central Executive Council term was officially released following a detailed scrutiny process conducted by the Election Committee at the union’s headquarters in Shillong.
In a notable development reflecting internal consensus, the union’s top three leadership positions have already been decided uncontested. Raymond Kharjana is set to assume office as President, with Pynkmenlang Sanmiet as Vice President and Reuben Anderson Najiar as General Secretary, after all three candidates secured their positions without opposition.
While the top tier remains uncontested, the election is expected to see keen competition across several other key portfolios. Voting will be held at Dinam Hall in Jaiaw from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, where members will cast their ballots for multiple executive positions.
A closely watched contest is shaping up for the post of Assistant General Secretary, with Melajied Khongbuh and Pynshaiborlang Rani in the fray. The Organising Secretary position will witness a four-cornered contest involving Cleenstar Shabong, Samuel Shabong, Hopefulborn L. Mawnai, and Nangrikupar Malngiang.
The Education Secretary and Information & Publicity Secretary posts have also attracted strong participation, with five candidates each vying for the positions, signalling a high level of engagement among members.
The Office Secretary race stands out as the most crowded, featuring seven candidates, including Wanmi-Shai-I Khongjoh and Wallamkupar Majaw. Meanwhile, the union’s focus on culture and environment is reflected in the contests for Sports and Cultural Secretary and Environment Secretary, the latter drawing the highest number of candidates with eight aspirants in the race.
The election process is being overseen by Danny Khyriem and Samuel B. Jyrwa, ensuring adherence to the union’s established democratic framework.
Founded in 1978, the KSU continues to uphold its guiding principle, “Mait Shaphrang Khlur Ka Ri,” as it prepares to usher in a new phase of student leadership and advocacy through this election.
