SHILLONG: Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K. Sangma has described the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) exit from the ruling coalition as an unavoidable consequence of shifting political numbers, not political friction.
Sangma said the decision to leave the alliance was solely UDP’s and driven by the loss of MLAs, which made the previous cabinet composition unsustainable.
While expressing personal difficulty over the split, Sangma affirmed the NPP’s commitment to public service and constructive engagement with the UDP.
Looking to the 2028 Assembly elections, he outlined the NPP’s strategic focus following the entry of new leaders, emphasizing that no preconditions or guaranteed tickets were attached to recent inductions.
Candidate selection for 2028, he said, will be based on consensus and ground realities, not prior agreements.
Sangma said the NPP’s growing ranks and organizational unity have strengthened the party’s position for the upcoming electoral cycle and reaffirmed the party’s readiness to meet the evolving political landscape.
