Shillong Golf Course Row Resolved: Entry Fee Withdrawn After Dorbar Shnong Protest

Rangbah Shnong Michael Hek said that the Shillong Club has agreed to discontinue the entry fee with immediate effect.

SHILLONG: A long-standing dispute over access and entry fees at the iconic Shillong Golf Course was amicably resolved on Thursday following a crucial meeting between the Executive Committee of Dorbar Shnong Golflink, local MLA AL Hek, and Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills RM Kurbah.

The issue had escalated on April 8 when the Dorbar Shnong shut the entrance gates of the golf course in protest against the imposition of entry fees on residents, particularly those visiting the area for routine morning walks.

Speaking after the meeting, Rangbah Shnong Michael Hek described the discussions as “fruitful,” stating that the Shillong Club has agreed to discontinue the entry fee with immediate effect. He further informed that one of the football grounds within the premises will be made accessible for use by the local shnong, while arrangements concerning security personnel will be streamlined to ensure smooth access.

With the demands addressed, the Dorbar Shnong has decided to reopen the gates that were previously locked. However, Hek issued a stern warning, stating that while the Shillong Club may claim ownership of the land, it must not act in ways that inconvenience local residents. He cautioned that any future violations of the agreement could lead to renewed restrictions and stronger action from the shnong authorities.

Echoing similar sentiments, MLA AL Hek said the intervention facilitated by the Deputy Commissioner helped resolve key concerns surrounding access and usage of the golf course. He confirmed that all demands put forward by the Dorbar Shnong have been accepted.

Importantly, it was also agreed that residents from adjoining localities—Mawroh, Shyiap, Pynthorbah, and Golflink—as well as nearby schools and churches, will be permitted to use the grounds free of cost, subject to coordination through their respective Rangbah Shnong.
