Shillong Taxi Association Demands Fare Hike Amid Rising Petrol Prices

The association appealed to the state government to consider the welfare and interests of local taxi drivers and owners.

SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association has sought a hike in local taxi fares following the recent rise in petrol prices triggered by the ongoing global crisis linked to the US-Iran conflict.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, president Wandonbok Jyrwa said the organisation would soon meet the Commissioner of Transport and the chairman of the Regional Transport Authority to place its demand for a fare revision.
He said the continuous increase in fuel prices has added pressure on local taxi owners and drivers and may also lead to a rise in the prices of essential commodities.
Jyrwa stated that there was already an understanding with the government that taxi fares should be revised upward whenever petrol prices increase and reduced once fuel prices come down.
He appealed to the state government to consider the welfare and interests of local taxi drivers and owners.
