SHILLONG: In the wake of escalating security concerns and a series of coordinated petrol bomb explosions across the city, the Shillong Police have formally requested the deployment of Central Paramilitary Forces to bolster security and maintain public order.
The call for reinforcement follows the latest attack on the morning of October 22, 2026, when unidentified miscreants targeted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Shyiap, Shillong.
Authorities confirmed this marks the fourth such incident in recent days, following similar attacks reported in Kench’s Trace, Keating Road, Laitumkhrah, and Langkyrding.
According to police reports, the explosive device thrown at the Shyiap facility landed on the steps leading up to the directorate, resulting in no major structural damage or casualties, leaving only minor smoke marks.
A formal case has been registered, and intensive investigations are underway to track down the perpetrators.
Addressing the security crisis, City Superintendent of Police Dangsan Khyriem emphasized that law enforcement has significantly stepped up preventive measures.
Authorities have intensified mobile patrolling and expanded checkpoints (Nakas) across Shillong and its surrounding outskirts to deter further unlawful acts.
To ensure long-term stability and public safety, the police department has fast-tracked the requisition of Central Parliamentary Forces, with reinforcements expected to arrive in the coming days.
While investigators have yet to establish a definitive motive, preliminary assessments point toward rogue elements attempting to take the law into their own hands and disrupt the city’s peace.
Police have assured the public that they are meticulously scrutinizing evidence and CCTV footage to bring those responsible to justice.
