SHILLONG: Hundreds of residents from Hima Langrin staged a major protest on July 22, marching to the premises of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) office in Shillong to demand the immediate removal of Nongtei Sing Syiemiong from his position as the Syiem of Hima Langrin.

The demonstrators undertook an extensive march from Umshyrpi Bridge to the KHADC office complex, emphasizing their primary objective: to meet directly with the Chief Executive Member (CEM) and Executive Member (EM) and press for the swift dethronement of Nongtei Sing Syiemiong.

The protesters expressed deep dissatisfaction with the council’s handling of the issue, asserting that the people of Hima Langrin have the legitimate right to elect their own Syiem.

They vehemently opposed any attempt by the District Council to unilaterally appoint a leader against the will of the public, demanding a proper, democratic election to choose a full-fledged Syiem.

The perceived delay by the District Council triggered severe outrage among the crowd, culminating in a tense moment when agitated protesters attempted to forcefully uproot the entrance gate of the District Council complex.

The situation was calmed after the CEM intervened and invited the protesters for immediate dialogue.

Subsequently, local village leaders entered the office premises to hold formal discussions with the council authorities.
