SHILLONG: Police in East Khasi Hills have arrested two men for leading a mob attack against law enforcement officers and three suspected thieves in the 11 Mer area of Mylliem.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 23, 2026, when local residents apprehended three individuals—Banshan Kurbah (25), Albert Marbaniang (26), and Ibalabet Kharmawlong (27)—on suspicion of theft.
When police arrived, they found an aggressive crowd assaulting the suspects.
As officers intervened to rescue the trio, some members of the mob turned on the police, physically manhandling them and using abusive language, while trying to continue attacking the suspects.
Police managed to extract the injured individuals, taking them to Pomlum PHC for medical attention before bringing them to Mawngap Police Station for their safety.

The suspects’ Maruti car (ML05-T-9837) was impounded.
All three were later released after no formal complaint was filed against them.
In response to the violence, Mawngap Police registered a suo-moto case and, following investigation, arrested the two main instigators: Arningson Kharkongor (37) and Pynshaiborlang Kharkongor (33), both from Mylliem Kyndong, 11th Mile.
They are being produced in court as the investigation continues.
Superintendent of Police East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, IPS, has appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands and to report suspicious activities to the police using emergency number 112 or by contacting the nearest station.
