SHILLONG: The Assam Police have clarified that 27-year-old teacher Bhabana Sarma, who was recently reported missing, was not abducted but had left her home voluntarily due to personal reasons.
Addressing the media, officials stated that Sarma was experiencing mental distress at the time, which led her to leave her residence on her own. Police have categorically ruled out any criminal involvement, dismissing widespread speculation that she had been kidnapped.
According to the investigation, Sarma left her home at around 10:30 AM on the day of her disappearance. She first took a Rapido bike taxi to an ATM in Jalukbari, where she withdrew ₹7,000 in cash. She then boarded an Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus to Paltan Bazar before hiring a taxi to travel to Shillong.
Police later traced her to a hotel in Shillong, where she had been staying alone. Authorities said the case was solved through detailed analysis of CCTV footage, tracking of financial transactions, and field-level inquiries conducted by a special investigation team.
Officials further clarified that her departure was not pre-planned but triggered by her immediate emotional condition. A police team has since reached Shillong to bring her back home safely.
The Assam Police have also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and rumours, emphasizing the need for responsible communication in such sensitive cases.
