SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Sniawbhalang Dhar has hit back at the Voice of the People Party (VPP), asserting that recent VPP rallies lack genuine mass support and that public backing is flowing toward the NPP ahead of the upcoming MP election.
Dhar criticized the turnout at VPP events, claiming their rallies across 26 constituencies failed to attract even 10,000 attendees.
He argued that if the NPP mobilized its workers across all 36 constituencies, turnout would easily triple that figure.
Citing historical data, Dhar pointed out that while regional parties have garnered around 40,000 votes in past elections, the NPP has consistently commanded over 180,000 votes, with political realignments only strengthening the party’s base.
Highlighting the NPP’s candidate’s academic credentials and clean image, Dhar said the party’s disciplined, issue-based campaign sets it apart.
He dismissed coalition concerns, affirming that all parties are free to compete and that the NPP’s grassroots support remains robust as evidenced by large turnouts at their meetings.
