SHILLONG: In the wake of recent violence that saw official vehicles vandalized and drivers injured, the Meghalaya Government Driver’s Welfare Association Central Body has formally petitioned Chief Secretary Shakil Ahmed for urgent measures to ensure driver safety and the immediate implementation of long-pending risk compensation.
Association President C. Syiemlieh raised serious concerns after government vehicles were targeted and set ablaze during civil unrest linked to the August 19 Khasi Students’ Union bike rally.
The association noted that drivers performing routine administrative duties have faced direct assaults, resulting in injuries and significant loss of state property.
To reduce ongoing risks, the association urged the administration to direct all government departments and directorates to suspend non-essential movement of official vehicles.

They recommended that departmental officers temporarily use private transport for daily tasks until public order is restored, while essential and emergency services should continue under heightened security.
The violence has also brought renewed attention to the long-standing demand for hazard pay.
Association representatives highlighted that government drivers are often sent into volatile situations without receiving any Risk Allowance.
They called for immediate approval of risk compensation and the establishment of protective protocols to safeguard frontline personnel during periods of unrest.
