SHILLONG: The Education Cell of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday called on Acting Vice-Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prof. Saroj Kanta Barik, to step down and hand over the post to Prof. R. Khongsdier, alleging that his appointment did not comply with university statutes.

In a memorandum submitted to Prof. Barik, the HYC expressed concern over his acceptance of the Acting Vice-Chancellor position.

HYC Education Cell member Enlang Sawian told reporters that Prof. Barik, as a long-serving member of the university, was fully aware of NEHU’s statutes and regulations. Sawian claimed that Prof. Barik’s decision to accept the appointment had raised concerns within the university community.

Sawian alleged that the appointment was made in violation of university rules, stating that Prof. Barik is junior to several other professors at NEHU.

He asserted that Prof. Romendro Khongsdier of the Department of Anthropology is the senior-most professor and should have been entrusted with the Acting Vice-Chancellor’s role.

Sawian also expressed disappointment that university authorities allegedly failed to adhere to the prescribed statutes during the appointment process.

The HYC has demanded the immediate removal of Prof. Barik as Acting Vice-Chancellor and the appointment of Prof. R. Khongsdier as interim Vice-Chancellor.

The organization warned that it would resort to further democratic agitation if its demand is not met.
