SHILLONG: Police on Thursday arrested Samuel Kharbani, General Secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Shillong East Circle, after he appeared at Sadar Police Station in connection with a prior protest.
This brings the total number of KSU members arrested over the August 19 Black Flags Bike Rally incident to five.
Kharbani and Assistant General Secretary Salestine Lyngdoh Rynghang, both from the KSU Nongmensong unit, reported to the station after being summoned regarding a dispute over temple construction at the CBI office premises.
While recording statements, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) also questioned them about the August 19 violence.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said Kharbani was arrested after evidence established his involvement, while Rynghang was released after being cleared of participation.
The four KSU leaders previously arrested are CEC President Raymond Kharjana, Vice President Pynkmen Sanmiet, General Secretary Reuben A. Najiar, and Assistant Organising Secretary Jerimaiah Pohthmi.
SP Syiem noted the leaders have been booked under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order (MMPO) Act, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, 1984, and various sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
The investigation remains ongoing.
