SHILLONG: The President of the Khasi Authors Society (KAS), Dr. DRL Nonglait, has formally accepted the offer of the National People’s Party (NPP) to contest as its candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election from the Shillong Parliamentary constituency.
In a letter addressed to the party’s President/Working President on Wednesday, Nonglait expressed gratitude to the NPP leadership and party workers for reposing faith in him and proposing his name for the 2026 Lok Sabha election.
He assured that he would adhere to the party’s principles, objectives, and collective decisions, and work sincerely for the welfare and development of the people, the state, and the country.
Nonglait also sought continued guidance and cooperation from party leaders and supporters.
It may be noted that during his tenure as KAS President, Nonglait garnered significant public support during a movement that led the state government to recognise Khasi and Garo as official languages, a decision that has since received the Governor’s approval.
Meanwhile, party sources indicated that four to five aspirants had initially expressed interest in contesting the seat. However, with Nonglait accepting the party’s offer, the NPP is likely to take a final decision on his candidature at a meeting scheduled for Thursday.
