SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has served a legal notice to East Khasi Hills police officials, challenging statements made to the press that linked the organization to two individuals involved in a traffic incident near Samkhamti Petrol Pump in Urkaliar on September 18, 2026.
The legal notice, issued through the KSU’s advocate, is addressed to Superintendent of Police (Shillong City) Dangsan Khyriem, MPS, and Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Hari Prasant M.R., IPS.
The KSU contends that police made unverified statements associating the apprehended scooter riders with the union, without credible or admissible evidence.
The union argues these claims have caused reputational harm and risk public misunderstanding of its activities.
The KSU clarified that it does not seek to obstruct the ongoing investigation or judicial proceedings related to the case, emphasizing that organizational liability should only be determined through due process and evidence, not suspicion.
Through the notice, the union demands a formal retraction and public apology from the police, to be published with similar prominence in the media within 15 days.

It also instructs police officials to cease making further unverified or derogatory statements about the KSU.
Failure to comply will result in the KSU pursuing civil and criminal defamation proceedings.
KSU Information and Publicity Secretary Pynshai Kupar M Dkhar reiterated that respect for legal process must apply equally to public officials and institutions, insisting that official statements be based on verified facts.
