Kharkrang’s defense comes amid growing controversy over alleged police extortion on highways in East Khasi Hills.

SHILLONG: BJP Meghalaya spokesperson M. Kharkrang has rejected allegations that East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem was directly involved in the alleged illegal collection of money by police personnel at Mawkhanu and Thangshalai.

Speaking to reporters, Kharkrang described Syiem as a capable and honest officer, expressing doubt that the SP would personally be involved in such activities.

Kharkrang acknowledged that an inquiry team has been set up to investigate the allegations and said the findings would clarify the facts.
