Meghalaya Launches ‘Ka Jingkyrmen’ Child Protection Project

Project Ka Jingkyrmen will focus on educating children about their rights, understanding consent and safety.

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the state government, have launched Project ‘Ka Jingkyrmen (Hope)’—a major initiative aimed at preventing offences against children, promoting legal awareness, and strengthening child protection under the POCSO Act, 2012.

At the launch, Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere, Patron-in-Chief of MSLSA, emphasized the importance of educating adolescents about the POCSO Act, particularly the legal consequences of sexual activity with minors.

She highlighted that the project was conceived in response to recurring cases involving adolescents, which can lead to school dropouts, pregnancies, and legal consequences for both boys and girls.

Commissioner and Secretary, Social Welfare, Pravin Bakshi, described the initiative as a vital step in strengthening child protection and community awareness, noting the prevalence of POCSO cases in districts like Mawlai and Mawryngkneng.

He outlined ongoing support programs such as Mission Vatsalya and the integration of the Child Helpline with emergency services.

Justice H. S. Thangkhiew, Executive Chairman of MSLSA, stressed the importance of accessible legal education and inclusive outreach, especially for vulnerable children.

Project Ka Jingkyrmen will focus on educating children about their rights, understanding consent and safety, raising digital awareness, and connecting communities to key helplines and resources.

The project will involve coordinated efforts from various government departments, law enforcement, educators, para-legal volunteers, and traditional village institutions, aiming to reduce school dropouts, guide children, and promote their holistic well-being.
