SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Judicial Academy, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Police, organized a one-day workshop titled “The Laws Behind Road Safety: Learn the Rules, Respect the Road” at the High Court Auditorium in Shillong.

The workshop brought together students, legal professionals, and traffic officials to raise awareness about responsible road use and the importance of adhering to traffic laws.

Director of the Judicial Academy, Smt. Kerpa Meida Lyngdoh Nongbri, opened the event by emphasizing the need for greater road safety awareness, especially among young people.

In the first session, Additional SP (Traffic) East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg, IPS, and Judicial Magistrate Shri Don Kitbor Koshy Mihsill interacted with participants, answering questions on legal and practical aspects of road safety. Garg highlighted the balance between individual rights and the safety of all road users, stressing that personal choices should not endanger others.

The workshop covered topics such as common traffic violations and penalties, the importance of helmets and seat belts, the e-Challan system, accident prevention, and the role of technology in traffic management.

Participants learned about Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, CCTV and ANPR cameras, AI-based monitoring, and emergency response systems.

Other speakers included Additional SP (Traffic) Ri-Bhoi, Orville Isaac Massar, MPS, and Deputy Inspector General, BSF Shillong Sector, V.S. Rathore, IPS, who shared insights on traffic enforcement and safe driving.

An interactive Road Safety Quiz tested participants’ knowledge on traffic signs, laws, and local road safety issues, while stalls set up by the Traffic Branch provided information on enforcement and technology.

The event concluded with a Road Safety Ambassador Pledge, reinforcing the collective responsibility for safer roads.

The programme emphasized that reducing road accidents in Meghalaya requires awareness, compliance, and respect for traffic laws from every road user.
