Can you fathom that in Khasi and Jaintia hills you would witness fish ponds and rice fields along the National Highways? Who would take the responsibility to fill the potholes? Has the National Highways Authority of India failed in its objective?

The Khasi Students Union East Jaintia Hills district demonstration was like a fish market as they demanded to repair the road which leads from to Jowai to Jorabat.

The National Highway-6 is a vital link which connects Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura which falls under the purview of the National Highways Authority of India.

The agitation led by the KSU to repair the road conditions has lasted for almost a week and led to heavy traffic but what is ironic is that a police contingent from Mizoram who were passing through attended the fishing competition along the road leading to Khliehriat.

Agitators also displayed banners against the state government and NHAI and the public gathering lasted till 5pm in the evening.

This is not the first time that the NGOs have demanded the repair of the National Highways at mission mode. After submission of various petitions the only answer from the top echelons was that we will look into the matter.

Why is the government and NHAI playing delay tactics? On meeting various government functionaries they pressed that this is under the jurisdiction of the NHAI or it might have exhausted the funds for fixing the roads due to the landslides which occur from time to time.
