Nongrum Seeks CBI Probe Into KSU Office Police Action

The demand comes after the arrest of three KSU leaders and widespread public alarm over the police’s use of tear gas.

North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum

SHILLONG: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, joined by traditional heads of Jaiaw Pyllun, has formally demanded an independent CBI investigation into the police operation at the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Jaiaw office on August 19, 2026.

The demand comes after the arrest of three KSU leaders and widespread public alarm over the police’s use of tear gas and alleged heavy-handed tactics during a post-rally raid.

After submitting a detailed memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Nongrum argued that only a CBI probe can guarantee impartiality and accountability, especially since state police are under scrutiny.

He cited the psychological trauma and health risks faced by residents after tear gas was fired indiscriminately, saying mere condemnation by authorities is inadequate.

Nongrum also accused some police personnel of wearing masks and removing name tags, making it impossible to identify those involved.

He has written to the Chief Secretary, Home Department, NHRC, and MHRC, urging their intervention and close monitoring of the case.

While Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong assured that the Home Department would address any lapses and review the incident, Nongrum insisted that only a full-fledged CBI inquiry would satisfy public demands for justice and accountability.
